Window Unit vs. Central System – Which Will Work Better In Your Home?

When you need to update or replace the cooling system in your home it can be difficult to decide if you need to have window units or put in a central heating and cooling system. There are benefits to both of the units but figuring out what you need can be overwhelming. There are pros and cons to both types of cooling units and you need to decide which works best for you. Check out these benefits and see which you might want.

Window Units

There are some great things about using this in your home. If you have a small area in your home that you need to cool this is a great way to do it. There is also the benefit that each room could be kept at a different temperature if needed. You will find these are cheaper than the big central systems as well. They are easy to use and move and can go with you if you need to move. They also do not need a system of ducts installed into your home. These are also quite easy to put in your windows and cooling down the room.

The downside to the window units is they are much noisier than the central units. Because these are installed in the window it can cause a security problem. These can easily be taken out of the window and someone could enter your home. You must also remember that this blocks a window in your home from being used for anything else. It will also keep that natural light out as well.

Central System

There are vast benefits to using a central system in your home instead of the window units. You can keep all the rooms all the same temperature at the same time. These are much more energy-efficient too. You can keep the energy draw on your home low and keep your bill under control as well. These units are also much quieter than the window units. You will typically not even know they are running. There are programmable thermostats that you can set and forget when it comes to monitoring your climate.

There are a few downsides to this as well. You will find that installing a central air system is more expensive than buying a window unit to cool your home. These will take installing duct systems and buying a unit for the outside to power your home. You must also make sure you get the right size for your home. If the unit is too small then it can run constantly and drive up your bill.

Take time to really consider both the pros and cons for both options to determine which will work best for your home. If you are only trying to keep a certain area cool in your home then the window unit may be best. If you want to cool the whole house and keep it all the same then the central system may work best. Most homes are moving over to the central systems to reduce their costs on their energy bill. Check into the different types and talk with your local HVAC technician. They can help you determine what works best and which one you will be more likely to get the most benefits out of.
