Houston has always been a big city in a big state, but over the last decade, it’s only gotten bigger. In fact, surveys show that nearly 100,000 people moved to Houston in 2017 alone.
This is part of an overall trend of population booms in sunbelt cities. But what is it about moving to Houston that is attracting so many new residents?
Let’s take a closer look.
1. Affordable Housing
Let’s get down to brass tacks: these days, many people move for financial reasons. Perhaps they’re looking for a new job opportunity or more affordable activities. Often, however, people are simply looking for a place where it is affordable to live.
While Houston is one of the biggest cities in the country, it doesn’t come with big-city price tags like you’ll find in New York or San Francisco. In fact, while a home will easily set you back over a million dollars in many cities, the average home price in Houston is less than $300,000.
There are also multiple neighborhoods to choose from, both in urban and suburban settings. No matter what kind of vibe you are looking for, Houston is bound to have a neighborhood that satisfies it.
2. Central Location
While it’s great to live in a place you love, it’s also nice to have proximity to other desirable locations. There’s nothing better than having several options for a quick weekend getaway that you can reach on just a tank of gas.
Houston certainly fits the bill in this department. In just a few hours, you can be in the cities of San Antonio or Dallas. Houston is also close by to the quirky capital city in Austin.
There are also some cute, small places nearby. For instance, in just about an hour, you can be in the beach town of Galveston.
And, if you are trying to get away a little farther, Houston is also home to a large international airport. This makes it easy to find affordable flights to anywhere in the country.
3. A Great Food Scene
If you’re looking for a place to live that offers an eclectic collection of varying cuisines, Houston is a great choice.
With its proximity to Mexico, the city has become famous for top-notch Tex-Mex cuisine. But, like any city of its size, Houston has also attracted a variety of immigrants from all over the world, which means you can find just about any type of food you’re looking for.
There’s also a variety regarding the types of restaurants available. Whether you’re looking for a chef-led five-star restaurant or a food truck, you can find it.
Houston also has a great offering for drinking, both for alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages. If you’re a coffee hound, you won’t need to rely on the big chains. Instead, you will be able to find many local coffee shops.
The same goes if you are into craft beer. Microbreweries are booming everywhere, and Houston is no exception.
4. Cosmopolitan Culture
The oil industry has been a huge driver of Houston’s economy. This, in turn, has attracted donors who are able to contribute to sources of culture and entertainment in the area.
These include museums, musical institutions, and performing arts centers. The art district also features the work of up-and-coming artists you can support.
5. Outdoor Living
Unlike other big cities like New York and Boston, Houston boasts a climate that allows you to enjoy the great outdoors year-round. If you love eating outside, most bars and restaurants offer patios that allow you to enjoy the outdoors.
There are dozens of parks in the city where you can enjoy picnicking, walking, or time with your dog. There are also plenty of bike trails in town that allow for relatively flat riding.
Houston is a great city for a sports lover, with basketball, baseball, and football teams all in town. The variety of colleges and universities in and around Houston also make it a good location for NCAA fans. Houston has even hosted the Super Bowl on a few occasions!
It’s not just the well-known sports that are big in Houston, though. You may be surprised to learn that Houston actually has a huge rodeo scene. In addition to the rodeo itself, the sport draws festivals and enthusiasts from all over the country.
7. A Great Job Market
Of course, there is no sense in moving to an area if you can’t get a job there. Luckily, Houston has a legendary job market!
The standard industries, like education and healthcare, are big in Houston. In terms of healthcare, some of the best medical centers in the country are located in Houston.
But technology companies are also flocking there, largely in part to the affordable land. Loose zoning regulations have also made it easy for developers to build office space for businesses to occupy, creating even more jobs.
Houston is also home to some more niche industries. For instance, NASA is based in Houston, as are some major oil companies. This makes the city a great location for engineers to flock to.
