Packing a storage unit takes a bit more thought than just tossing everything inside. Here’s how to pack a storage unit so you get the most out of the space.
If you have rented out a storage unit then chances are you have a lot of stuff you are planning on squeezing into it.
With a little planning and organization, you should be able to get the most out of the space. Keep reading to learn how to pack a storage unit.
1. Plan Ahead
Start out by packing your things into similar sized boxes so that they are easily stacked on top of each other. As you pack the boxes clearly label the box with what items are inside. This way you are able to identify what is inside later and will make unpacking that much easier during a move.
Place the heaviest items at the bottom and towards the back. This will eliminate crushing lighter more fragile items and will be more convenient when filling in the rest of the unit. You will also want to create aisles between rows of boxes so that you can access everything throughout the unit without having to pull everything out to find something in the back.
2. Add Shelving
Most self storage units do not have any shelving in place, it’s just a large open space. To make the most of the entire unit, add some metal shelving and take advantage of the vertical space while also keeping things organized.
If you are unable to install shelving, make good use of the empty space in your dresser drawers, bookshelves or inside of appliances such as the dryer drum.
3. Go Vertical
If you are planning on storing any furniture in your storage unit these items typically take up a lot of space. Stand the items on end so that they use the vertical space and when possible unassemble those pieces that will allow it.
If you have a table that won’t unassemble, make use of the flat surface and place boxes on top or underneath and fill all available floor space.
4. Frequently Used Items
Any items that will be used frequently should be organized near the front of the self storage unit. This makes it easier to access items that you may not need year-round but you know you will be needing eventually.
You don’t want to deal with the frustrations of searching down heavy coats and boots when winter is coming or trying to find a specific box of holiday decorations when your schedule is already busy at that time of year.
5. Make a List
While you are packing your boxes to go into the storage unit create a list of the items that are going into storage.
This will help when you are trying to remember if something you owned is packed away later on and will also assist you if you need to make an insurance claim in the event of a natural disaster such as a flood or fire.
