Improve Indoor Air With HVAC Systems

The air inside buildings is usually more polluted than the air outside. This is due to the fact that dust, allergens, mold, bacteria etc thrive in these enclosed conditions. The air quality is the reason that some buildings are known as sick buildings. People residing in sick buildings tend to become ill due to flu, cold etc. The air in these sick buildings can be improved by tweaking the HVAC system.

The HVAC system supplies air throughout the building and if the air filters in the HVAC system are covered with dust and mold then the whole building will be breathing air containing dust particles. This in turn could lead to allergies and lung ailments. However, if you clean the air filters regularly then the air quality will improve drastically. MERV filters or minimum efficiency reporting value filters with a rating higher than 8 will improve the air quality sufficiently. However, before buying a higher value MERV filter you should call the HVAC company and ask them whether the filter can be used in the system because a higher value MERV filter could cause air flow problems and this could lead to even repairs. Use the MERV filters that are recommended by the HVAC company.

Another option is to install air cleaners. Air cleaners are installed in the HVAC system and these air cleaners use UV rays to kill infection causing bacteria, virus etc and improves the indoor air quality considerably. Before installing an air cleaner measure the air quality and after installing the air cleaner measure the air quality, you will find a marked difference. The sick building will become a healthy building.

Dust, grime and bacteria can collect on the condenser coils and evaporator coils. These can cause air quality problems because the system will be unduly pressurised to do more work and the dust etc can circulate throughout the building. Cleaning the condenser coils and evaporator coils regularly will ensure cleaner and good quality air.

The air vents are another area where dust, pollen and other allergens collect. When the air passes through these air vents they also carry these dust, pollen and allergens and when people breathe the air, they get sick. However, when you clean the air vents the air that passes through will be without the dust and the air quality will have improved.

Similarly, the duct work in the building usually contains a lot of dust, bacteria, virus, mold etc. Air, when it passes through these ducts carries the bacteria, virus etc from one part of the building to another. Hence you will have a lot of people with infections at the same time. But if you clean the ducts regularly then you will have ensured cleaner air , air free from dust, bacteria, pollen and the like. However, it is important to avail the services of a professional duct cleaning company to clean the duct work because the duct cleaning company will have the necessary equipment to clean the ducts thoroughly.

By following the above mentioned steps you can improve the indoor air quality.
