Simple Ways to Manage Diarrhea at Home

Most people get diarrhea at some point. Even though it may seem like a minor problem, it can have life-threatening consequences if left untreated. 1. Hydration

The most important thing to do when you have diarrhea is to hydrate. Dehydration can be fatal, especially for older adults and children. Over-the-counter hydration solutions, water, soups, and fruit juices are great for hydration. Avoid caffeinated drinks, soda, milk, and alcohol as they could cause even more dehydration. 

2. Eat Right

Some foods may reduce the symptoms of diarrhea. Even though it may seem like a good idea, failure to eat could make things worse for you. Some of the most appropriate foods include bananas, potatoes, toast, and white rice. 

Probiotics are great when you have diarrhea. They are rich in good bacteria that create a healthy environment in your gut. Some of the best ones include dark chocolate, kombucha, cottage cheese, green olives, yogurt, pickles, and kefir. 

They have an essential role in protecting your intestines from infection. 

3. Replace Your Electrolytes

When you have diarrhea, consider replacing your supply of electrolytes. This includes chloride, potassium, and sodium. You can create an electrolyte drink by mixing four teaspoons of sugar, half a teaspoon of salt, and one liter of water. You may also add some lemon or orange juice to the drink. 

4. Don’t Exercise

Even though exercise is great, you should avoid it if you have diarrhea. Exercise and other strenuous activities will dehydrate you more. You can, however, go on with your daily activities. Try to get as much rest as possible. 

5. Ginger

Ginger has been used to manage diarrhea for thousands of years. It may also be appropriate for treating nausea and other stomach problems. You may use ginger in your tea or food. If you are on blood thinners, you should not start using ginger without consulting your doctor. 

6. Over the Counter Medications

If you have diarrhea that does not seem to go away, consider taking over-the-counter medication to treat it. There are lots of over the counter drugs that may reduce cramping and the frequency of your stool. 

7. Avoid Fried Foods and Dairy

Consider adopting a BRAT (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast) diet when you have diarrhea. If you cannot, stay away from non-probiotic dairy foods and heavy, fatty foods. They could make your symptoms worse. 

Even though it is possible to manage diarrhea symptoms at home, you should consult a doctor if it goes on for over two days. It is also vital to seek urgent medical help if you have the following symptoms:

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • A dry mouth
  • Puss or blood in your bowel movements
  • Diarrhea that goes on while asleep
  • Abdominal pain
  • Sudden weight loss

Children and older adults with diarrhea need immediate help. Home remedies may not be enough to address the problem.
